The Davy's Grey RPG / The Red Vox RPG

Because it was about time!

• "What are these games?"

The Davy's Grey RPG came from a game originally made by Twitch streamer Vinny Vinesauce in RPG Maker VX, first seen at his 2018 PCRF Charity Incentive stream. While two games were shown, I lack the knowledge about the Chrono series which the first game, called Chrono Continuum, heavily takes inspiration from. The second game however, The Davy's Grey RPG (named after his band at the time), was left heavily unfinished and disconnected, leading to a lot of creative opportunities to explore. The Red Vox RPG (named after his current band) came about by Vinny recently mentioning in one of his Shroomjams streams of 2024 that he "was surprised that no one had remade those games yet" upon seeing a few RPG Maker games that reminded him of his own creations. Therefore, as a very much late way of celebrating his 40th birthday, I decided to take a swing at how his game could end up looking like not only if it was finished at time, but if it was made today using RPG Maker MZ and adding a few new updates and references to make it more interesting while somewhat keeping the original's essence.

• "What's in these games?"

STORY = Davy Grey, a young man sent on a quest by the king himself, must travel between the three main islands of the world, known as the SAU: Statusen Island, Ample Island and the feared Unity Islands, home of our main villain. Why is Davy on this journey? What happens in his adventure? Who's this big bad villain? Play now and find out more on this freaky narrative sprinkled with some 2000's edginess.

CONTENTS = While both games follow what was shown as close as possible, stringing together the levels, characters, setpieces and ideas; The Red Vox RPG is basically my take on Vinny's original vision. Because of this, there are no Vinesauce references, inside jokes or memes to be seen in The Davy's Grey RPG. On the flip side, The Red Vox RPG offers a lot of surprises for both those who know nothing about Vinesauce and veteran chat members alike!

GAMEPLAY = Slight puzzle solving and world exploration with some delightful secrets here and there. The combat is also kept simplistic in traditional RPG fashion, but is slightly refined in The Red Vox RPG. 

SOUNDTRACK = The original game's soundtrack was made by Vinny using Fruity Loops Studio (also known as FL Studio) at the time together with some crusty Chrono Trigger midis. However, I've decided to follow the classic RPG Maker trope, using some of the default RPG Maker VX tracks for The Davy's Grey RPG. For the The Red Vox RPG, however, some of the OST from different games of Vinny's liking were used... except for Square Enix's OSTs due to copyright concerns, which were replaced with some of my own preferences.

PLAYTIME = The Davy's Grey RPG should take around three and a half hours if you're willing to see everything in it. The Red Vox RPG, due to its new content, rises to about triple that. Unless these are somehow your first RPGs ever, there should be no issues.

• "Any other projects?"

The development of these games definitely lit my fire for game development once again. While I may come back for other Vinesauce projects in the future, this has all made me want to finish an original RPG of mine that's been in dev purgatory since 2021: "Tales of Yomei", a game made with the purpose of being a teaser to a bigger game in the future, telling it's whole story. Stay tuned for it's launch in both brazillian portuguese and english, coming sometime before 2077!
